| The birth of Alexandria, capital of culture |
When Alexander the Great died in 323 BC, he was in the process of consolidating his empire and building a capital at the mouth of the Nile River, in Egypt. The city was to be named Alexandria, after himself. With the demise of Alexander, one of his generals, Ptolemy, was put in charge of Egypt. This general was even more ambitious than Alexander; he aspired to make the new city the capital of the Mediterranean world, for government, commerce and culture. He picked a site near his palace to construct a "Temple of the Muses", an institution not unlike a modern university. This "Temple" was destined to be a center for culture and science for the next one thousand years. The university opened its doors in 300 BC and Ptolemy staffed it with the most prominent scholars of day, many of them coming from Greece.
